Washington, D.C., February 21, 2024—According to a new Ipsos poll conducted on behalf of All* Above All Action Fund, Black men strongly support access to abortion and want their candidates to address abortion issues.
More than 9 in 10 Black men (91%) oppose government interference in abortion decisions.
- About half of Black men (48%) personally support the right to abortion and want it to be legal and available, with men of color overall showing the same level of support (48%);
- Another 43% of Black men oppose the government making that decision for others even though they are personally against abortion, higher than all men of color (36%).
Black men are paying attention to abortion issues and care what candidates think.
- More than 6 in 10 Black men report paying attention to abortion issues, either a lot (26%) or a fair amount (36%);
- Men of color overall show fairly similar rates, with 24% reporting they are paying “a lot” of attention and 39% a “fair amount.”
- More than half of Black men say a candidate’s position is important or the only factor for them; this rises to nearly 6 in 10 for all men of color;
- 36% of Black men say a candidate’s position on abortion is one of many important factors (41% for men of color);
- 17% of Black men say they will only vote for a candidate who shares their views on abortion (17% of men of color).
- Black men are more likely to prefer that candidates talk about how abortion issues affect both women and men (47%), while 34% want to hear candidates talk about how they affect women;
- Only 19% don’t want candidates to talk about abortion issues at all;
- Men of color reflect similar preferences, with 49% preferring candidates talk about how abortion affects women and men, 32% saying they want candidates to talk about how they affect women, and only 19% saying they don’t want candidates to talk about abortion at all.
Black men support national legislation that would protect abortion access.
- About two-thirds of Black men favor proposed legislation that would protect people’s right to make their own healthcare decisions about abortion, improve availability and affordability of abortion care, and prevent elected officials from creating barriers to receiving abortion care (64%, 40% strongly).
- We see similar levels of support among all men of color (68%, 37% strongly) and among the general public (67%, 45% strongly).

“Since the Dobbs decision, we’ve seen poll after poll that affirms the undeniable importance of abortion access to the majority of voters nationwide. This poll shows that Black men, a key 2024 voting bloc, strongly support access to abortion. As the election approaches, they are paying close attention to abortion issues and want to hear from candidates about where they stand. Candidates at the national level and down the ballot must, in no uncertain terms, demonstrate their commitment to a future where abortion is affordable, accessible, and available. With the escalating abortion care crisis, anything less is unacceptable.”

Findings from an online survey conducted by Ipsos, February 7-8 2024 among a national sample of 1,375 U.S. adults age 18+. The sample also includes an oversample of 375 respondents who identify as a man and as someone who Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color (BIPOC). Overall, the sample includes a sample of 512 BIPOC men, and among those, a sample of 260 Black men. The sample is demographically and geographically representative.
